More research is going on the initiation of cancer process in the body. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has generated much interest. Now it has been seen to play a major role in the blood supply for the uncontrolled cell growth. Embolisation  of the tumor vasculature is being tried in many cases.

Scientists have discovered the first known natural source of VEGFIII in the three-toed skink, a shy Australian lizard which lives underground, similar to the VEGF found in the tumors.

The gene responsible signaling of this protein may be the future target to control cancer.
